In 1980, the Pinellas County EMS Authority was set up through a Special Act of the Florida Legislature. This Special Act led to a countywide Emergency Medical Services System. In 1988, a new EMS delivery model know as a “Public Utility Model” was formed, establishing Sunstar Paramedics as the sole countywide paramedic ambulance service. Under this model, the EMS Authority contracts with a private ambulance service to respond and transport all emergency 9-1-1 calls and non-emergency interfacility transports.

In 1988, the Sunstar logo was placed on 51 identical ALS ambulances. Through the years of increasing population and demand for EMS, the fleet of ambulances has grown to 74 ALS ambulances and 20 BLS ambulances as of 2017.

Paramedics Plus has been the sole provider for ambulance services in Pinellas County since 2004, providing BLS, ALS, and Critical Care Transport levels of service as well as Mental Health Client transportation.

In 2018, Paramedics Plus was acquired by A&M Capital Partners, LP, a middle-market private equity fund that is part of the A&M Capital Platform. As part of the acquisition, Paramedics Plus rebranded as PatientCare Logistics Solutions, LLC, and it continues to operate as Sunstar Paramedics in Pinellas County.

Sunstar Paramedics is a nationally recognized EMS system that was awarded the Florida Governor Sterling Award for performance excellence, the highest quality award in Florida, in 2009. Sunstar also has the accolade of being one of only a few ambulance services to hold all three industry accreditations for the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS), Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services, and Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE) for its communications center.
